1. Quantity Estimate Only, Not a Procedure Guide
The RV Winterization Antifreeze Calculator estimates how many gallons of antifreeze a typical rig of your described size and configuration needs. It does not tell you where your bypass valves are, the order to open or close them in, how to drain your low-point drains, or any other step of the winterization procedure — those vary significantly between manufacturers, model years, and even trim levels. Always follow your RV owner's manual or manufacturer's published winterization instructions for the actual procedure. Getting the sequence wrong can leave water trapped in a line that then freezes and cracks.
2. Freeze Damage Can Be Severe and Expensive
A single missed fixture, an un-bypassed ice maker line, or water left in a low point can freeze, expand, and split a pipe, fitting, or the water heater tank itself — repairs can run into the thousands of dollars and may not be discovered until the following spring when you turn the water back on. This calculator's gallon estimate does not guarantee every line in your specific rig has been protected; verify by running antifreeze until you see solid color (not diluted pink-tinted water) at every faucet, the toilet, the outdoor shower, and any other fixture before considering the job done.
3. RV Antifreeze Is Not Automotive Antifreeze
Only use antifreeze specifically labeled for RV and marine drinking water systems, made from propylene glycol. Automotive antifreeze, made from ethylene glycol, is toxic and must never be introduced into a system used for drinking water, cooking, or bathing. Always flush RV antifreeze thoroughly from your lines in spring before drinking from or cooking with the system again, even though RV antifreeze is formulated to be practically non-toxic.
4. Rig Variation
Actual plumbing line length, fixture count, and water heater capacity vary substantially between rigs of the same nominal size category. The size and fixture inputs on this Service are rough proxies, not a measurement of your actual system. If your rig has an unusual layout — bunkhouse plumbing, multiple water heaters, an aftermarket outdoor kitchen, or extensive line runs — budget extra antifreeze beyond this estimate.
