1. A Simplified Estimate, Not a Manufacturer's Load Table
This calculator assumes a straight-line relationship between load and inflation pressure, scaled from the maximum load and maximum pressure molded into your tire's sidewall. Real tire manufacturers publish load/inflation tables (often through the Tire and Rim Association) that are close to linear but not perfectly so. Always cross-check this tool's result against your tire's actual published load/inflation chart, available from the tire manufacturer, before a long or heavily loaded trip.
2. Never Below Your Door-Jamb Minimum
The vehicle manufacturer's minimum recommended cold pressure, printed on your door-jamb or frame sticker, is a safety floor for reasons beyond simple load math — it also accounts for handling, stability, and the specific tire size and load range the vehicle was designed around. This calculator will never recommend a pressure below the minimum you enter, but you are responsible for entering that minimum accurately and for never going below it in practice, regardless of what any calculator suggests.
3. Cold Pressure Only
Every number here assumes a cold tire — one that has not been driven on for at least three hours, or driven less than one mile. Tire pressure rises meaningfully as tires heat up from driving; checking or adjusting a hot tire to these numbers will result in under-inflation once it cools. Always check and set pressure before driving, not after.
4. Weight, Age, and Damage Still Matter
Correct inflation does not compensate for an overloaded axle beyond its rated GAWR, a tire past its service life (check the DOT date code — many manufacturers recommend replacement around 6–10 years regardless of tread depth), or a tire with cracks, bulges, uneven wear, or impact damage. Inspect your tires independently of this calculator before every trip.
5. Know Your Own Tire's Numbers
This tool is only as accurate as the max pressure and max load figures you enter. Those numbers come from the specific tire mounted on your vehicle today, not from a prior tire, a similar-looking tire, or the vehicle's original-equipment spec if the tires have since been replaced. Read your own sidewalls.
