1. Estimates Only, Not a Fuel Guarantee

The Propane Tank Duration Calculator produces estimates built from simplified models of furnace duty cycles and appliance ratings. Real furnace duty cycles, appliance efficiency, altitude, wind, humidity, actual tank fill levels, and regulator behavior all vary — sometimes dramatically. Your propane can run out faster than this tool calculates, and in extreme cold that can be dangerous. Treat every output as a planning starting point, budget generous margin, and monitor your actual consumption. If a trip depends on staying warm, bring more propane than the number on the screen.

2. Carbon Monoxide Safety

Every propane-burning appliance produces carbon monoxide (CO) — an odorless, colorless gas that kills campers every year. Install and maintain working CO and propane detectors in your rig, test them before each trip, and replace them per the manufacturer's schedule. Keep ventilation open whenever a combustion appliance is running, and never sleep with an unvented portable heater burning unless you have both a working CO detector and cracked-open ventilation. Early CO poisoning symptoms include headache, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, and confusion — if you or anyone in your rig experiences them, get to fresh air immediately and seek medical attention.

3. Leak Checks and Servicing

Check every propane connection for leaks with soapy water — never with a flame or any ignition source. Bubbles mean a leak: close the tank valve and fix the connection before using the system. If you smell propane (a rotten-egg odor), shut off the supply at the tank, ventilate, and do not operate switches or ignite anything until the source is found. Have your propane system inspected and serviced by qualified propane technicians — regulators, pigtails, and appliance burners are not do-it-yourself components if you are unsure of what you're doing.

4. Cold-Weather Regulator and Vaporization Limits

Propane must vaporize inside the tank to feed your appliances, and vaporization slows as temperatures drop and as the tank empties. A nearly-empty tank in deep cold may not deliver its rated BTUs — furnaces can starve, regulators can ice up, and below roughly −10°F tank pressure may drop too low to run appliances at all, even with fuel remaining. This tool's math does not model these effects. In serious cold, keep tanks fuller than you otherwise would and treat the low end of a tank as unreliable.

5. Transport and Storage of Cylinders

Transport propane cylinders secured upright with valves closed and plugged, in a ventilated space — never in a closed passenger compartment or a hot trunk. Store cylinders outdoors, upright, away from ignition sources and building openings, and never inside your RV's living space. Follow your cylinder manufacturer's instructions and applicable regulations, including recertification dates stamped on the cylinder collar.

Determining whether any result is appropriate for your particular purpose is solely your responsibility. Any reliance you place on the Service is strictly at your own risk.

9. Limitation of Liability
